Craig Hawkins is a House and Trance DJ based out of Denver, Colorado. He began DJing in 1994 at the age of 19 as a result of being awed and inspired by the Baltimore/Washington, DC rave scene. Craig initially struggled to find his style and started out playing early hardcore/gabber records before moving on to ambient music. He quickly realized that he was limiting his appeal and ability to grow as a DJ and became frustrated with his abilities. It was around this time when two DJs he frequently saw at parties began to make their mark on Craig. Josh Wink and Scott Henry are two DJs to which Craig credits as being his main inspirations.
Turning to house music, Craig quickly found his niche. He began hooking up with other local DJs and hone his skills at mixing. Craig found that house music provided him a perfect outlet for his long mixes which extended upwards of 2 minutes in length. Feeling as if he was ready to play out, Craig found himself occasionally playing at a local club in his hometown of Harrisburg, PA. As he continued to increase his abilities at DJing, Craig was invited to his first party titled “Klick” in the Phillidelphia area. Soon after that, he played two other parties in the Central PA area featuring DJs such as Josh Wink, Micro, Nigel Richards, and Dave Trance.
Craig’s first big party took place in Feburary of 1996 in Baltimore, MD. Mosaic was a party organized by the members of an internet mailing list and was hosted by Baltimore’s premier party organizer, Ultraworld’s Lonnie Fisher. Playing along side a half dozen other internet DJs, including Scott Henry, Craig was finally able to put his mark on the North East party scene.
Craig moved to New York City where he DJed at a weekly house party which had a small but highly dedicated following. This is when Craig started to branch out into other styles, including Drum and Bass, techno, and even back to his original style of hardcore and ambient. Known for DJing up to 6 to 8 hour stretches every week, Craig finally recognized himself as a skilled and quality DJ.
Since that time, Craig has gone on to play other parties in the New York, Baltimore, and Phoenix areas. He landed a weekly residency at the Crowbar club in Phoenix, AZ where he continued his 7 to 8 hour long sets playing anything from vocal house to hard trance, depending on the time of night.
Today, Craig continues to share his mixes with friends and visitors to his website, bpm.org.
